Black raspberry is a native North American plant that has led to many cultivars. The wild plant grows in upland woodlands, woods edges, in thickets, and by the margins of lakes and streams on well-drained soil. It differs from the tall, wickedly thorny, common blackberry by being less prickly, and having sweeter fruits.
